This little piece is Victorian sentiment at its best. The figural mandolin pendant features a working compass on one side, and an etching of a swallow on the reverse. Swallows were thought by sailors to bring good luck when spotted out at sea. Swallows became a talisman for those going on long journeys. Here, both the compass and the swallow do double duty to ensure that the wearer always finds his or her way back.
