One of the coolest bracelets I have found in a long while. This c. 1870 Scottish silver book chain bracelet closes with an agate padlock. Four agate hearts are joined together on the surface of the padlock to make a four leaf clover. The reverse of the padlock features a small locket that could hold a photo or a keepsake.
Agate jewellery became popular in the mid-1800s as interest in geology and domestic travel grew. Train lines transported tourists to Scotland, where jewellery made from the many agate varieties was fashioned.
The bracelet displays a detailed folate design on the links, and is in excellent condition. This was a piece that was remarkably well cared for. The link is called a book chain because it was fashioned from flat sheets of silver folded over like pages in a book. It produces a link that is dramatic, but also very comfortable.
The locket may also be removed from the bracelet and worn as a pendant.
