Whitby jet came into fashion during Queen Victoria’s mourning period. The material is the fossilised remains of wood and was found in quantities around Whitby in Yorkshire. I love this piece set against a gold chain. The intricate carving work includes a bale that was carved out of the original piece.
The reverse of the locket features a photo frame. I have left an adorable baby (called Andrew, according to the inscription on the reverse) but the photo can be easily replaced.
Materials: Whitby jet, pearl, gold (pearl setting is untested, but is likely 9ct). Photo frame is base metal.
Dimensions: Locket measures 3 cm wide. 3.7cm tall excluding bale. 5.8cm tall with bale.
Condition: Very good antique condition
Markings: None
Notes: I have left the photo in the frame, but this can be easily removed.
