As someone who loves shoving a sparkly brooch in my hair to dress things up, I was so thrilled to find this piece, which is a proper, pristine barrette dating to c. 1900.
The barrette is substantial and highly detailed - from the decorative settings and tine rose cut diamonds around each of the nine amethysts, to the gold beading and scrollwork on the sides of the setting.
The underside features the original two-pronged barrette mechanism, which snaps securely and holds hair well.
