This is one of my favourite crested signets to date. The ornate bloodstone is carved with a crane holding a stone in its foot. This is a symbol of vigilance and protection, as legend told that a crane would hold a stone in its foot while guarding it’s flock. If the crane were to fall asleep it would drop the stone and be awakened, thereby assuring that it would remain awake and able to guard its family. Below the crane sits a helmet, another sign of protection, surrounded by highly detailed scrolls. At the base of the crest is a lamb holding a flag, which is likely a paschal, symbolising sacrifice and devotion.
I love the way that the setting was carefully built for the ring. The gold mount is curved on the underside to hug the finger. The shoulders of the band are fluted, and the overall band is in excellent condition and perfect for everyday wear.
The ring is in excellent condition and bears stamps for 585 (14 ct gold). As this is an older piece in 14ct, there is a possibility that it is of continental origin.
